Asleep in America is as much about being awake as it is about being asleep. The
exhibition, by Peter Hobbs Digrazia is a statement about the bombardment of
messages in our media-driven culture and the toll it takes on citizen awareness.
"This isn't the country I grew up in," says Digrazia, "There's an emotional and
behavioral avoidance, a protective reaction to the media over-stimulation and the
nature of post-industrial consumerism. Regardless of the source, the outcome is that
we are deadened and numb. We're asleep as a nation."
Asleep in America is comprised of 24 sepia-toned photographs, shot entirely with a
Leica Deluxe 3 digital camera. Balancing a profound solemnity with quiet indignation,
the exhibition is Digrazia's response to the current cultural crisis.
"My greatest wish would be for viewers to step back and consider what they may
unconsciously be avoiding."
